Sergio Mendes still up to date. This new album brings Carlinhos Brown as co-star and more Brazilian rhythm and soul. Also the sweetest voice of Gracinha Leporace. It’s Dance, it’s coll, it’s bom tempo.

I was excited when I heard that Sergio was to debut a new cd whilst listening to "Watercolors" on xm. I heard a couple of selections and wondered why I thought I had heard them before. Of course being a Sergio Mendes before many of you existed, I HAD heard them before! The arrangements were different, but in some, only slightly. Now to the meat of my review. I like he addressed a Jobim, a Valle' and a Nascimento tidbit, but he's missed some he should have recorded but never did. I chose not to discuss that, other than he put a couple of "newbies" on here that are keepers. "Orpheus" is classic 70's Sergio & "Brasil whatever" they were all great to me. Nice melody and rhythm and little hip hop electro phunk.! Then there is "Carminhos Cruzados" a wonderful piece of art. Mrs. Mendes ( Grachinha Laporace of Bossa Rio note ) is delicate and still alluring. Laporace repeats her feats on "So Tinha...", which I still love by Astrud Gilberto, and the duet with Seu Jorge "Maracatu". These are not new songs to the Brazilian love affair I have, but are to the Mendes treatment. Still he's more deja vu here, than in the last couple of releases, and I love it. Finally Seu Jorge is refreshing to hear. This sound goes back to the samba tempos and melodies that anyone, who loves Sergio Mendes, remembers! This is a winner, while not perfect, Sergio only missed it by a "head's length" and deserves a buy here!

I saw Sergio back in the late 60's at Lincoln Center in New York City. He was exciting to listen to and his group was energetic and great to watch. I love his music and the passage of time has only increased my appreciation of his great talent! Keep it coming, Sergio!
